Unlocking Memories Through Music
As a child, I watched Alzheimer's disease rob my grandma Lydia of her most precious memories. In honor of my grandma, I created 'Unlocking Memories Through Music' at 14 years old. I hope to highlight my activism as well as educate others and offer my assistance at events and media opportunities.
Dementia is a general term that describes brain disease symptoms. Alzheimer's is a type of dementia that can cause problems with memory, thinking and behavior. Despite common belief, this is not a normal part of aging and according to the Alzheimer's Association, 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. As the disease progresses some may lose the ability to hold conversations and even function on their own. Although treatment is available, there is no cure.
Dementia vs. Alzheimer's
Think of your favorite song. Does that song remind you of high school prom, a family tradition or maybe even an accomplishment? Now, imagine what happens when someone with dementia hears a song that reminds them of a time in their life that brought them joy. As a flautist, I create this sense of normalcy when I perform flute duets at memory care homes across NY state. My gift of music remains after each live performance through radio and CD donations. The media and community partnerships I created has helped me donate over 200 radios and perform at over 300 homes.
Gift of Music
Sharing my personal story helps put a face to Alzheimer's as I advocate in front of Congress and NY State Legislators. It is essential that elected officials support family members and their loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Did you know that the Alzheimer's Association reported that Alzheimer's and other dementias will cost America $355 billion in 2021? As an Alzheimer's Association Committee Member, I have raised over $3,000 for the Association's Rochester Chapter and I am committed to encouraging others to join the fight to #endalz.
